Dolphin headed back to Bay City from Mackinac Island
This year's Mac race had it all! After a great first half of the race, going toward Canada and staying ahead of the fleet, we survived a squall that carried heavy rain and 53 knots of wind. You could see Larry smiling and laughing as the boat was screaming along at 11.5 knots, heeled over at 45+ degrees as the strong winds tried to push the mast in the water. The wind shut off thirty miles south of Cove Island and we spent eight hours of slow going in a huge light air hole. Faster rated boats Equation and Vincitore were able to turn the mark and kept going, leaving the rest of the fleet behind to struggle with the lull. Dolphin crew worked hard to keep the boat moving but was edged out of the podium by Painkiller.

Harry (from the bow): You want answers?
Larry: I think I'm entitled to them.
Harry: You want answers?
Larry: I want the truth! Harry: You can't handle the truth! LAR, we race on a boat that has head sails. And those head sails have to be set and doused by men with harnesses. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Turb? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for that spin halyard and you curse the foredeck. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that spin halyard’s death, while tragic, probably won the race. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, wins races...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at the Compound, you want me on that bow. You need me on that bow. We use words like “gybe-set”, “Mexican”, “floater”...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent achieving something. You use 'em as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to an afterguard that race and win under the very mark roundings I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide them! I'd rather you just said "thank you" and got me a Miller Lite. Otherwise, I suggest you go down below and pack a ‘chute. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to! Larry: Did you order the Samurai douse? Harry: (quietly) I did the job you sent me to do. Larry: Did you order the Samurai douse? Harry: YOU’RE GODDAMN RIGHT I DID!!!

35 years of sailing
For nearly 35 years, the Dolphin has been sailing around the
fresh water of the great lakes and has felt the salty air of the
Atlantic while racing the SORC in the early 70's. Gary Mull
designed this 54 footer weighing in just under 20 tons. She
now sails mostly in Lakes Huron and Michigan and her home
port is in Bay City, Michigan. This year's Mac race crew has a
combined total of nearly 300 years of Mac race experience! |

"The book recounts a more exciting sailing experiences than a
three hour daysail on Saginaw Bay. However, unforgettable scenes
like the Port Huron to Mackinac racer Dolphin, with Larry Ruhland
at the helm, heeling with the wind exciting a group of guests aboard,
are priceless.
The Dolphin, they say, has a habit of sailing rings around the Appledore,
just to show they can do it, and that's almost worth the trip itself."
